Fine sand, a gentle slope and where to park in August. From Gandía to Oliva, ranked for families.
Why this coast works with children
Almost every beach in la Safor shares two things: fine sand and a very gentle slope. That means a child can walk a good way out and still touch the bottom, and that the waves break far out and arrive small.
The exception is a day of strong easterly wind, which changes the swell along the whole coast. That is the moment to check the flag before you go down and, if it is red or amber, swap the plan for the marshland or for Gandía town.
Platja de Gandía
The best equipped: lifeguards all season, showers, toilets, sunbeds and bars and restaurants right behind. With a pushchair or with grandparents it is the easiest of all, because you reach it from the promenade without steps.
It is also the busiest in August. If you are going between eleven and two, the trick is to arrive before ten or wait until five.
Miramar and Daimús
These are the beaches of our houses to the south and, with the same water and the same sand, they have considerably fewer people than Gandía. Daimús has a playground and good access; Miramar is longer and more open.
For families going to the same beach several days running, they are the best balance between services and quiet.
L’Ahuir, if you want an unspoilt beach
North of el Grau, with no promenade and no buildings: dunes, vegetation and sand. There are lifeguards in high season but far fewer services, so bring water, a parasol and food.
You get there by road and the car park is a dirt one. With small children and a lot of beach gear it can be awkward; from six or seven years old it is a treat.
Oliva
Kilometres of sand with almost nothing built behind. The Terranova and Burguera stretch is one of the most open on the Valencian coast and hardly ever fills up, not even in August.
It is also where the wind comes in hardest: that is why the kitesurfers are here, and why it is worth anchoring your parasol properly.
Parking in August
The rule is simple: before ten in the morning or after five in the afternoon. In the middle of the day the promenade area in Gandía is full and you end up parking ten minutes away on foot.
From our houses in el Grau you walk to the beach, which is how to avoid the problem altogether.
